BISFed 2017 Seville World Open Report

Seville hosted the largest event of the year this week with athletes from around the world coming together to compete in the Spanish city. Athletes from 7 countries took to the podium in the Individual events with Thailand ending the event top of the medals table with 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals to add to the 2 golds won in the teams and pairs events.

BISFed 2017 Seville World Open – 2 weeks to go!!

There are now only 2 weeks until the penultimate international competition in Europe for 2017. FEDPC will host the BISFed 2017 Seville World Open in Spain. Almost 100 competitors will descend on the Spanish city to earn those valuable World Ranking points that will aid qualification into the 2018 World Championships in Liverpool next year.

BISFed 2017 Poznan Regional Open Championships – Individual Results

The Polish Boccia Association hosted yet another World Class event last week. Over 80 athletes from across Europe descended on Poznan for the BISFed 2017 Poznan Regional Open Championships. The event game athletes in Europe their 2nd opportunity to earn ranking points from the Regional Open Championship tier event. The tier was introduced for the first time this year by the BISFed Competition Committee to encourage more of our members to provide more opportunities for the athletes for elite level competition.

BISFed announces Doping Ban

The Boccia International Sports Federation (BISFed) has announced that Russian boccia athlete Dimitri Kozmin has been suspended for one year for an Anti-Doping Rule violation. Kozmin returned an adverse analytical finding for trimetazidene in a urine sample provided on 23 May 2016 while competing at the BISFed World Open in Dubai, UAE. Trimetazidene is included on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2016 Prohibited List (S.4. Hormone and Metabolic Modulators) and is prohibited at all times, both in and out of competition.

New World Ranking System

The BISFed Competition Committee have now released the new World Ranking System for the 2017-2020 quadrennial. The new system has been developed using the knowledge of the Competition Committee and the mathematical expertise of UK Sport’s Intelligence Team. The proposed method has been put through extensive simulations using data from past events and will go through further testing prior to its introduction ahead of the 2018 season. continue reading

BISFed 2017 Asia & Oceania Championships, Hong Kong – Team and Pairs Results

The team and pairs finals produced some fantastic performances in Hong Kong this morning.

There were no shocks in the BC1/BC2 team event. Favourites Thailand put on an incredible show beating Japan 13-0 in the final. The Japan team have had a number of excellent results leading up to the Regional Championships, and despite the heavy defeat the signs look good for them as their road to a home Paralympic Games begins.

Boccia UK wins bid to host the BISFed 2018 World Championships in Liverpool

The Boccia International Sports Federation (BISFed) has awarded the rights to host the 2018 World Championships to Boccia UK. The competition, which is the biggest and most prestigious on the international calendar outside the Paralympic Games, will be hosted at Exhibition Centre Liverpool from the 9th to 19th August 2018.

The Canadian Cerebral Palsy Sports Association (CCPSA) yesterday announced that long-time boccia volunteer and official Donna Zorn, is the newest member of the CCPSA’s Hall of Fame. Established in 2005, the CCPSA Hall of Fame recognizes and honours CCPSA athletes, coaches, officials, builders, and teams who have had extraordinary achievements in their sport, in Canada or Internationally.

Sao Paulo 2017 – Parapan American Youth Games

Over 800 youth athlets gathered to celebrate the opening of the fourth edition of the Parapan-American Youth Games in Sao Paulo last night.  The competition runs through to Saturday 25th March and will have athletes from 12 sports compete for the medals. With 3 years to go until Tokyo 2020, many of the athletes will see this as an invaluable stepping stone to further success in Japan.

BISFed International Boccia Rules v.2

This is a huge task that helps everyone.  During the process of translating, I have received several questions for clarification, and some incorrect references have been pointed out. We do not want to make any drastic changes at this time, but in fairness to everyone, we are issuing a version 2 now which contains the corrected references and some extra comments.

Making Boccia Accessible in Rwanda

UPDATE on Boccia Ball Roll Test (Boccia Rule

We regret to announce that there will be a further short delay to the introduction of Rule

It has been necessary for BISFed to engage a new supplier for the standard Roll Test, and the approved test device will now be available from 20th March 2017.

In order to allow athletes to adjust to the new Rule, we will delay the introduction of Rule until 21 May 2017. The first BISFed-sanctioned competition at which Rule will apply will be the 2017 Asia and Oceania Regional Championships in Hong Kong starting on 21 May 2017.

IPC President meets Tokyo Governor for boccia match

Governor Koike, who set-up a number of boccia teams within Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) after being impressed by the sport at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, challenged Sir Philip to a match during his last visit to Japan in October 2016 and the IPC President duly accepted.

Joining Sir Philip’s IPC team for the match was Rio 2016 mixed team BC1-2 boccia team silver medallist Hidetaka Sugimura, IPC Governing Board member Yasushi Yamawaki and IPC Chief Executive Offer Xavier Gonzalez.

BISFed is pleased to announce that the Board has co-opted Jon Morgan onto the Board to fill the vacant Treasurer role. President David Hadfield said: “ I am delighted that Jon has agreed to join our Board. He is currently the Chief Executive of Disability Sport Wales, and is passionate about sport for disabled people and boccia in particular. Jon will bring a great set of commercial skills to the Board discussions and I and the Board look forward to working with him.”

Spanish Rules Now Online

After announcing our new competition rules at the end of January we have now received our first translation curtesy of Andrea Zamora and Teresa Calverol. The pair have provided the Spanish translation and are currently working on a Catalan translation too. All translations will be added to the ‘Rules’ section of the website.

Date Alteration for the BISFed 2017 European Championships, Povoa

We have now consulted with all of the participants at the BISFed 2017 European Championships, and a significant majority support the proposed date change.

There will be minimal, if any, fallout for either of the World Open events in Kansas or Bangkok. We also have a waiting list for both events so these events will not be affected.

Update on Boccia Ball Roll Test (Boccia Rule

Manufacture of the official device which will be used to perform the Roll Test at BISFed-sanctioned competitions from 2017 is under way. Unfortunately there has been a slight delay in the production process, but we expect to be able to ship the device from the beginning of March 2017. We will post a photograph of the device on the BISFed website during week commencing 13 February, together with instructions on how to order the device for those who require it.

World Rankings Updated

The ‘old’ world ranking system has been used for qualification to events in 2017. It will be used for seeding purposes for all events held in 2017.
