Day 3 – Brazil Claim Gold!!!

The afternoon session started with Brazil in action once again. This time they were up against the overwhelming BC3 pairs favourites, Korea. The challenge didn’t faze the home team as they raced into a 3-0 lead after some erratic play from Korea.

The favourites were soon closing the gap and went in to the last end with a 3-2 deficit but all the drama was still to come. With Korea only needing 1 point to take the match to a tiebreak many spectators were making themselves comfortable. Much to the crowds disgust a rules violation for not breaking the ramp from the Brazilian pair meant they had a ball retracted and handed 2 penalty balls to the Koreans.

The Korean pair played out their remaining balls but were still searching for the extra point to take it into a tiebreak. There was still hope with their penalty balls but neither found the jack and Brazil took the 5-2 victory and sent the crowd wild!

There were emotional celebrations after the match and again at the ceremony as Brazil claimed their second medal in Carioca 2 taking them top of the boccia medals table.

The last final saw Thailand take on Japan in the BC1/BC2 team. Thailand had scored over 10 points in all of their games going in to the final. Japan took an early 1-0 lead but Thailand are masters of the BC1/BC2 team event and were 6-1 up at the half way point. Thailand continued to out manoeuvre the Japanese and the game was all but over as Thailand extended their lead to 9-1 going in to the final end.

Thailand saw out the game and were eventual 9-4 winners retaining the medal they won in London 4 years ago.

The individual competition starts tomorrow with 48 games set to be played from 10:00 (local time). All results can be found on the official Rio 2016 website (www.rio2016.com).
