Day 3 – Bronze medals for Thailand, Portugal and Greece

In a pulsating first game of the day Great Britain came up against Thailand in the BC4 pairs bronze medal match. GB took a 1-0 lead after the first end but after playing long in the second Evie Edwards was unable to get her first blue to stick to the jack.

Larpyen took full advantage as he mounted the pressure back in to the GB pair. GB were unable to get closer and handed the advantage to Thailand. The 4th Thai ball inadvertently pushed a blue closer and temporarily handed McGuire and Edwards the advantage. After a heroic effort with their 6th ball Thailand were unable to take advantage and GB went in to a 2-0 lead.

Thailand took their time out to regroup. The pair came out fighting taking the next end 2-0 to draw the game level going in to the last. GB once again went long in the 4th but again the pair were unable to trouble the jack with their first ball. An incredible first ball from Thailand went closer and GB were unable to put pressure on Thailand who were able to hand over their final 5 balls to the referee and take a 3-2 victory and the bronze medal.

In the BC3 competition Greece came up against Singapore. The Greek team got off to a quick start putting their red next to the jack and Singapore were unable to respond with Greece taking the opening end 3-0. Singapore earned a point in the second end but from that point onwards Greece dominated taking the 3rd end 2-0 and the 4th 3-0 to finish 8-1 winners.

The second match of the morning on court 4 was the BC1/BC2 team bronze medal match. Portugal, favourites going in to the match, were hoping to deny Argentina of their first Paralympic medal in the Boccia. They took the first and second ends 2-0 to charge in to a 4-0 lead. It was 4-1 going in to the 4th but all of Portugals experience started to shine through as they closed out the game to win 6-2.

The finals take place this evening with Thailand, Japan, Korea, Brazil and Slovakia all refeaturing.
