Portugal Halt GB Clean Sweep

Portugal’s BC2, Nelson Fernandes prevented a GB clean sweep at the BISFed European Championships, as Britain enjoyed a hat-trick of gold medals. The home favourite progressed to the final by overcoming team-mate Abílio Valente, the tournament top seed and came out 4-3 winner in the final.

 

David Smith met Russia’s Mikhail Gutnik in the BC1 final, after the Rio 2016 champion secured impressive victories in his quarter and semi-final matches. Smith would find himself 4-0 down to Gutnik in the final, but the Briton hit back to win 5-4 and earn his third European title.

GB’s Jamie McCowan secured a 3-2 semi-final win over Grigorios Polychronidis of Greece, the Rio 2016 silver medallist. McCowan saw him set up a clash with Damian Iskrzycki in the final, following the Polish athletes’ 10-1 win over the Czech Republic’s Adam Peška. Again a Brit found themselves in trouble going in to the final end but faught back to clinch a 8-7 victory.

Stephen McGuire completed a hat-trick of British triumphs by winning the BC4 competition. McGuire sealed a 5-3 win against Slovakia’s Michaela Balcova to progress to the gold medal match and then faced the challenge of Russia’s Sergey Safin, who was a 5-2 winner against Ukraine’s Artem Kolinko in the last four. McGuire enjoyed a more comfortable final than his compatriots, as the Briton secured a 6-1 win to claim the gold.
